Understanding Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in the Workplace

 Sunday, May 27, 2012

As part of Heartland Bank’s Power Breakfast Series business leaders were welcomed on May 23rd, to hear Gary Batke share his expertise on how social media has impacted the rights of both employers and employees. The presentation included information on the following key topics:

  • The hiring process
  • Employee organizational rights
  • Sexual harassment
  • Misconduct investigations
  • Trade secret protection
  • Post-employee litigation

Gary reviewed social media statistics and the billions of pieces of content (e.g., links, photos, notes) that are shared on Facebook, tweets sent on Twitter, views of YouTube videos and blog postings on the Internet. He covered the social media issues for employers during pre-employment, during employment and post-employment including the opportunities, internal and external risks that may come up during each phase of employment.

Business Leaders Learn How Social Media Impacts the Workplace

Gary emphasized the importance of developing a social media policy for your company. He shared some advice on dealing with social media, making sure to craft appropriate policies and procedures and reminded attendees not to be afraid of revising them on a regular basis as the workplace, law and technology changes.

The presentation was concluded by Heartland’s President & CEO, Scott McComb, answering any questions the guests had about the bank or on the economy. “The Power Breakfast Series gives Heartland Bank the opportunity to continue our tradition of helping clients by bringing them sound financial advice and excellent resources to help them make valuable decisions.” stated McComb.
