Celebrating Our Nation’s Independence – 4th of July Community Events

On July 4, 1776, our founding fathers claimed independence from Great Britain and democracy was born in this great land. Every year about this time, Americans celebrate that freedom and independence with family gatherings, picnics and community events. Here at Heartland Bank, we’ll be right there with you, celebrating every step of the way. We’re proud to be a part of the communities in which we serve and look forward to seeing you this weekend in the city parks, high school stadiums and parade routes all around Columbus and central Ohio.

Stay Local and Enjoy Johnstown's 40th Annual Firemen's Festival

Times were tough in the mid-1970s for the Village of Johnstown Fire Department. Former Fire Chief, Johnny Johnson, realized that in order to provide much needed EMS service to the community, he would have to learn the art of fund raising. And quick! Golf outings and bake sales helped, but were not enough. Forty years later, what started out as a local street fair to earn a few dollars has turned into a full-blown old-fashioned festival with true hometown flair.

The Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival (CBJF) is a three day cultural celebration featuring hundreds of musicians, delicious cuisine, artisans from the region, amusement rides and engaging family activities. The event started seventeen years ago as a one-day dedication of Gahanna’s new Creekside Park area and the beginning of Olde Gahanna’s revitalization. The Festival has experienced unprecedented growth in attendance and has truly become more than the celebration of music, food and fun; it has become a premiere family summer event.

Searfross Elementary SchoolFor the third consecutive year, Heartland Bank was invited to visit Mrs. Cartwright’s fourth grade Social Studies classes at Searfoss Elementary School in Johnstown to broaden their financial literacy and understanding of the banking industry. This was initiated in response to the school’s preparation for curriculum alignment with the newly adopted State of Ohio Common Core standards for Social Studies.

Shirley SpellmanThis month’s employee spotlight features Grove City Branch Manager, Vice President Shirley Spellman. After studying Secondary Education at The Ohio State University, she’s spent 30+ years in the banking industry and has been a valued Heartland Bank employee since 2003. Her first job at Heartland was as the Gahanna Branch Manager, where she enjoyed the opportunity to meet and form close working relationships with other department employees housed at the corporate office.

GRIN Ribbon CuttingFor more than 40 years, Gahanna Residents in Need (known to the community as GRIN) has operated in disparate locations – providing services housed within a number of different Gahanna church locations. After a successful fundraising campaign that illustrated the community need, GRIN now has a new home on Morrison Road in Gahanna. Local leaders, the GRIN board and business officials celebrated the grand opening of the faith based organization’s new location last week.

Congratulating George R. Smith on his Retirement After 20 Successful Years

George SmithIn 1995, Heartland Bank president Tiney McComb hired George R. Smith as his new CFO. “At that time, Tiney was looking for a partner he could count on to lead the entire operations and accounting areas of the bank. He needed someone who would work hard and selflessly serve the shareholders, manage risk and costs, as well as provide the analytical counterpart to complement Tiney’s sales, growth and marketing acumen,” according to Scott McComb, Chairman, President and CEO of Heartland Bank. During the next twenty years, George helped manage Heartland Bank’s growth to $675 million in assets with 12 Columbus area locations. On his birthday last week, George Smith retired.
