The history of bluegrass music is traced back to British and Irish immigrants who arrived in Appalachia in the 18th century and brought with them the musical traditions of their homelands. Some 300 years later, bluegrass music is alive and well and being celebrated locally in Newark at the third annual Bluegrass on Main Street event this Saturday, September 24.

Grove City Arts in the AlleyCelebrating 37 years in 2016, Arts in the Alley is held the third weekend of September every year in downtown Grove City. Hosted by the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce (GCCC), more than 100 juried exhibitors display and sell fine art, photography, jewelry, crafts, fabric art, glasswork, pottery and wood creations. A variety of musical entertainment is also featured throughout the weekend – high school marching bands and show choirs, jazz, blues, classic rock, folk, gospel, country and much more.

19th Heartland Bank Charity Golf Classic

What started out as an effort to help a few local children’s charities in 1996 has blossomed into a full-fledged annual fundraising event that has been gaining momentum in each of the last 18 years. Since that first golf outing in 1996, when the Bank made a small donation to the Licking County 4H Horse Council to last year when six local charities selected by the Bank collected a total of $30,000, Heartland has made benevolent donations of almost $375,000. Former recipients of funds from the Charity Golf Classic include Big Brother & Sisters of Central Ohio, Ronald McDonald House, March of Dimes, the Buckeye Ranch Foundation and Junior Achievement, among many others.

The tomato arrived in America in the late 1700’s along with many myths surrounding it. Did you know that early Americans thought tomatoes were poisonous? Fortunately for all of us, more than 250 years later, adventurous gardeners like Thomas Jefferson helped the tomato gain popularity. Though botanically a fruit, the Supreme Court ruled the tomato a vegetable in 1893. The import tax placed on vegetables (but not fruits) protected U.S. tomato growers at that time from foreign markets.

Summer Jam Music & Arts Festival

The third annual Summer Jam Music & Arts Festival will take place from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. this Saturday, July 16, at Westgate Park. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Fantastic Food Garden’ and you’ll find local bands, artists, food trucks, craft artisans, and kids’ activities for everyone in the family! To coincide with that theme, festival organizers will be encouraging awareness of healthy eating, and back yard/community gardening. Partnering businesses will have fun activities for kids that involve vegetables and fruits and the children’s art zone which will focus on fruit and vegetable themed crafts. Kids can even stop in the Heartland Hospitality Tent and pick up a dirt cup and lettuce seeds to plant and nurture at home.

The purpose of the Foundation is to "Promote Excellence" by funding innovative projects beyond the traditional expenditures of the Board of Education.  Since 2004 the Foundation has provided funding for innovative projects and student support in excess of $1.3 million.
