King Gyros Nearly Triples Capacity With Renovation

 Sunday, June 17, 2012

As Yanni Chalkias, owner of King Gyros, was approaching his 20th year in business in 2011, he decided to give his restaurant a present - an extensive renovation that almost doubled the dine-in seating, a new sheen to the exterior, a larger pastry display showcase, wheelchair access, and a more expansive patio. “It was definitely time to do something,” Chalkias stated.

Chalkias had been chipping away at improvements for the last five years, mostly making more room in the kitchen. With sales growing, he thought now was the time to address the dining room and add more space. Before the renovation, the restaurant was 1,200 sq. ft. with seating for 34. After completion of the renovation space was increased to 2,000 sq. ft. and now has 65 seats available to customers. This allows for a larger lunch crowd, which many of the patrons have asked for and are excited with the renovation.

Whether you're in the mood for a delicious Mediterranean dish made with the freshest ingredients, or even a juicy feta burger and Greek fries, King Gyros is the perfect restaurant for you. You can enjoy mouth-watering gyro sandwiches, falafel, juicy lamb shanks, authentic stuffed grape leaves, tasty baklava, and their wonderful Greek salads.

Yanni was born in Rodos, Greece. Part of a big family, he’s the oldest of four brothers. From the age of eight, he helped his father in their spice business, where he worked after school. The family came to America and immigrated to Cleveland in 1976. "When we arrived here, we thought all the buildings would look like New York, big and tall. That's how we envisioned America. We worked in restaurants not for pay but to gain experience,” says Chalkias.

“Our father thought that living the good life was learning to work honest and hard, and that would get you a long way. So that's what we did, even from grade school, junior high and high school." said Chalkias. After opening and operating several restaurants throughout the 1980's, King Gyros Greek Restaurant was opened with the family in 1991 to give people in Whitehall and the east side a fast casual dining experience. In 1992 Yanni's parents, who owned Vaso's Greek Restaurant, retired overseas. Since then Yanni has grown the business, expanded the menu, made annual improvements, and continues to make the best food with old family recipes.
