Heartland Bank Goes “Back to School” With Visit to Searfoss Elementary

 Sunday, June 02, 2013

Searfoss Elementary SchoolTwo financial professionals from Heartland Bank were recently invited to visit Mrs. Cartwright’s fourth grade Social Studies classes at Searfoss Elementary School in Johnstown to broaden their financial literacy and understanding of the banking industry. This was initiated in response to the school’s preparation for curriculum alignment with the newly adopted State of Ohio Common Core standards for Social Studies. Randy Kelly, Johnstown Branch Manager, and Tanya Bennett, Assistant Branch Manager, taught five sessions explaining basic financial vocabulary terms, how to distinguish a want from a need, and how to plan and implement a basic budget. They discussed currency and its production, as well as career opportunities within the banking environment.

Great Minds ThinkHeartland Bank used an interactive booklet called “Great Minds Think: A Kid’s Guide to Money” provided by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland during the presentations. The booklet is filled with engaging exercises to help young students make thoughtful decisions about money and helps introduce them to concepts such as earning, spending, budgeting, and saving. Each page includes a basic lesson on money management followed by an exercise that reinforces the lesson learned.

“The students were great – they listened and were engaged in what we were trying to teach. We really commend Mrs. Cartwright for her energy and enthusiasm in this financial literacy initiative and were honored to have Heartland Bank represented in the Johnstown-Monroe School District at Searfoss Elementary,” Bennett said.

Although the fourth graders at Searfoss are long past learning their ABCs, it’s never too late to go “back to school” and learn a lesson about the ABCs of your financial future. Call one of our Community Bankers at Heartland and let them “teach” you how to be smart with your hard earned money.

To order free print copies from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, email the learning center, or call 216.579.3188.
