As a youngster in Norwalk, Ohio, Heartland’s VP, Retail Sales Manager Ben Babcanec thought he’d grow up to be a baseball player. Or a teacher, just like his Dad. Or a community banker, just like his Mom. Shortly after graduating with a finance major from the University of Toledo in 2001, a teller job opened up in Gahanna at Heartland Bank and that, as they say, is the “rest of the story”. Thirteen years and several different positions later, Ben is now an integral part of the senior management team here at Heartland Bank.
Ben’s primary responsibility as Retail Sales Manager is growing the Bank’s deposits, consumer loans and most importantly, managing the retail staff at all 11 branch locations. When asked about his proudest achievement at Heartland, he’ll say it’s when he can promote one of his employees. “There is no better feeling than to see a member of our hard working staff move up through this organization. I am proud that at Heartland Bank, any employee can work hard and know they can stay at our institution to have a career!”
The Quality and Excellence Award has been a tradition at Heartland Bank since 1994 and many of our employees wear the pin each day that signifies this honor. Employees that have been given this award were chosen based on excellent customer service, being an example of a team player, helping other employees and exceeding the expectations of their job duties and responsibilities. Ben was proud to be presented with the Quality and Excellence pin in August of 2002. To him, it means “Consistently going above and beyond to get the job done. And, making sure that our Heartland customers get the best personalized banking service in the areas that we serve.”
When he’s not working, running, golfing, cheering on the Browns and Indians or grilling out in his backyard, he’s volunteering for the Gahanna Lincoln High School Business Advisory Council, Sunrise Masonic Lodge, or the Gahanna Lions Club, where he served a one year term as President. He and his wife Dinah are proud parents of son Leo, 5, and daughter Stella, 2.
Ben likes to give the following advice to his employees – “Banking is a relationship business; listen to the customers to know what is important to them because every customer is different. Based on what you hear from your customers, you can work with them to find solutions while providing superior customer service.”
It is Heartland Bank’s mission to provide the best personalized financial services at competitive prices for the economic growth and well being of individuals and businesses within our communities. This goal shall be accomplished through well trained, caring employees with unquestionable integrity, who practice sound and innovative banking principles which will maximize bank profits and growth.
Ben Babcanec, as well as all of our Heartland Bank employees, live by this Mission Statement every day. Don’t believe us? Stop by any of our 11 central Ohio locations and you’ll see that Heartland Bank is really “Where Banking Feels Good!”
