It was a sunny, fall day as the crowd gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of a’MAYS’ing Meats on October 13th. The festivities included music from QFM 96.3, great prizes, coupons and weekend cookout specials.
Quality Meats – Custom Butchering – Deer Processing
Owners Ernie Mays and his wife Tracy established the business in August, 2012. Tracy has worked as a restaurant manager for 15 years and Ernie has been in the industry for 17 years. He worked in the business when it was known as Perfects Meat Market and Freez-loc Food Service. “I know I can make the business successful," says Mays. “I have made many friends in the community and will be in contact with them to schedule processing dates. Many of my customers sell beef and hogs to their own customers who then come to me to process."
Mays has learned from experienced meat cutters, butchers and Ohio meat inspectors. He has been managing the processing area for 15 years and built a large customer base that will continue to patronize the business. In his experience with Freez-loc Food Service and Perfects Meat Market, Mays was responsible for scheduling butchering dates, getting meat cutting instructions and working directly with the customers.
Ernie and Tracy both shared, “Tom and Shawn Staneart have helped us a great deal by just being patient with us getting started. Doug Orr has help with his accounting knowledge and past experiences with the meat processing industry. And of course, Heartland Bank helped by providing money to get started. That’s certainly a very important part!”
Deer Hunting Season is November 26th thru December 2nd and a’MAYS’ing Meats will have extended hours beginning November 26th for two weeks (8:30 am – 7:00 pm for deer drop-off and meat pick-up). They do custom butchering and deer processing the old fashioned way but they do use Facebook and their website www.amaysingmeats.com to help get out specials and current butchering prices.
a’MAYS’ing Meats is located in Johnstown, Ohio and sells fresh meat and butchers cattle and hogs. They are the only local processing plant for nearby farmers and the only locally owned retail meat market. Customers have the option to purchase from a local business and local farmers.
Within a five-mile radius of the Company’s location, there are about 4,500 residents. When looking to the future of their business they believe they will have so much work to do they won’t be able to get it done. There will always be people wanting to have cattle and hogs processed for them.
