The New Albany Arts Council congratulates Tiney McComb and receives a $10,000 grant in his honor!

                                                                                     

The New Albany Arts Council congratulates Tiney McComb as the recipent of the 2011 Jeanne and John G. McCoy Community Service Award. The award is given each year by the New Albany Community Foundation to a person or persons in the community who have demonstrated exceptional community service and volunteerism. To honor Tiney, last week the foundation announced at its annual benefit, A Remarkable Evening, that a $10,000 grant would be made to the New Albany Arts Council to sponsor this year’s summer youth musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s State Fair. The arts council is proud to have Tiney McComb as its 2012 sponsor.

In addition to many other philanthropic and not-for-profit contributions Tiney McComb has made during his long, successful career, he established an endowment fund in memory of his late wife, Helena, with the New Albany Community Foundation. According to Tiney, Helena loved vocal music and loved her community. As such, the fund he established in her name has supported the youth musical series, the Columbus Children’s Choir and any number of vocal music opportunities for young people.

Budget “breathing room” is nearly always a concern for non-profit arts organizations. Directorial and licensing fees, costumes, facilities rental, and set production costs are yearly financial necessities for the summer youth musical. Even more important and consistent with Tiney McComb’s vision is that this gift sustains musical theater programming for our local intermediate and middle school aged children for another season.

“The foundation is pleased to again this year support the good work of the New Albany Arts Council and their youth summer musical series,” said Craig Mohre, President of the Foundation. “We are particularly pleased that the sponsorship of State Fair will be in honor of Tiney McComb, who has contributed so much to the foundation, the arts council and the community.”

The community-directed generosity of this timely gift is particularly appropriate, since Helena McCombs possessed a desire to support vocal music for and by children. “Tiney McComb and the Heartland Bank have sponsored previous New Albany Arts Council musicals, so recognition from The New Albany Community Foundation is a fitting public acknowledgement of Tiney’s philanthropy. We are thrilled to welcome back Tiney as this year’s sponsor and are most appreciative to be the recipients of this gift in his honor,” stated Kathy Mayhorn, NAAC president.

Open auditions to children ages 8 to 15 for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “State Fair” will be held Saturday, March 17, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Broadway Bound Dance Centre. Performances will be held July 13, 14, and 15, 2012, at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts. Those interested may contact www.naarts.org for further information.
