Businesses Honored During 13th Annual Groundhog Day Economic Development Breakfast

08-Feb-2010 GAHANNA, Ohio – Three awards honoring lifetime achievement and Best New Development were presented today during the 13th Annual Groundhog Day Economic Development Breakfast at the Creekside Conference and Events Center. Those honored were:

OSU Medical Center Carepoint at Gahanna, 2010 Excellence in Development
For the redevelopment of vacant 56,000 square retail site at 920 N. Hamilton Road into a specialty medical facility housing, family medicine, cardiology, obstetrics, rehabilitation, sports medicine, orthopedics, imaging, and a laboratory.

When OSU Physicians, Inc. purchased the former Big Bear grocery store on N. Hamilton Road, it had been sitting empty and forgotten for more than four years. Now, this 56,000 square foot medical facility is a shining example of adaptive reuse.

After $5 million in renovations, CarePoint at Gahanna provides a variety of quality health care services to the Gahanna community including cardiovascular medicine, imaging, physical therapy and sports medicine. This innovative facility will be a lasting and significant addition to Gahanna’s medical triangle. Dr. Joseph Yu accepted on behalf of Carepoint.

Jim Grote, Donatos, 2010 Excellence in Development Lifetime Achievement
More than 20 years ago, Jim Grote located the home office of Donatos Pizza on Taylor Station Road helping to establish the Office, Commerce and Technology district in Gahanna. Since purchasing his first pizzeria in 1963, Grote has grown Donatos to nearly 200 restaurants in five states through a commitment to quality and customer service. Through ups and downs, industry shifts and changing consumer palates, the company has continued to grow, reaching new markets and staying true to its foundation of product, principles and people.

Grote is also an inventor. In 1972, he invented the Peppamatic which automatically sliced and applied pepperoni to pizzas and revolutionized the frozen pizza industry. From this invention, the Grote Company was born and from its headquarters on Gahanna Parkway. The company has become the world’s leading manufacturer of precision slicing and application equipment for the food processing industry. 200 S. Hamilton Rd. Gahanna, Ohio 43230 - 614.342.4043 – www.gahanna.gov

A strong proponent of community involvement, Grote is an avid supporter of the YMCA and Junior Achievement. Jane Abell, his daughter and President and COO of Donatos Accepted on Grote’s behalf.

Tiney McComb, Heartland BancCorp, 2010 Excellence in Development Lifetime Achievement
For contributions to the Gahanna community. McComb moved Heartland’s headquarters to Gahanna in 1997 and has consistently served the community through his company as well as committing time to city boards and organizations.

McComb formed Heartland Bank in 1988, on a foundation of customer service and giving back to the community. The company has remained committed to services and has grown to 11 full service banking offices in Franklin and Licking counties. McComb is a long-time supporter of Gahanna Events (sponsor of the Heartland Stage at the Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival, Grand Marshall of the 2009 Holiday Lights Parade), Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, and the Gahanna Community Improvement Corporation (while on the CIC board he led the planning and negotiations for the Creekside Development).

One of Heartland’s recent programs, “Pennies to Dollars”, allows customers to use coin machines in the N. Hamilton Road branch to donate money to Gahanna Lincoln Middle School East. Customers receive cash for their coins and the 5% service fee goes to the school. Future plans include using this program for other organizations including raising donations for Gahanna Lincoln Schools sports programs. Tiney McComb’s son, Scott McComb, president and CEO of Heartland Bank, accepted on his behalf.
